The history of Wyeth began with the opening of a drug store by the Wyeth brothers in Philadelphia in 1860. The company was founded in 1926 under the name American Home Products Corporation. Since then the company has developed into one of the global leaders in pharmaceutical and health care products. The company divisions include Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth Consumer Healthcare and Fort Dodge Animal Health. Wyeth is traded on the NY stock exchange under the symbol WYE. Wyeth has 52,000 employees and is selling its products in over 140 countries.

The muscoskeletal division of Wyeth is developing rhBMP-2 (recombinant human bone morphogenic protein) which plays a key role in the formation of new bone. It is approved in the EU and is currently in US regulatory review. It is considered for treating patients with acute long-bone fractures requiring surgical management. In cooperation with Medtronic Sofamor Danek the use of BMP-2 in spinal fusion is being investigated. RhBMP-2 is approved and launched in the US for lumbar interbody spnial fusion.


RhBMP-2 is currently in phase II trial for lumbar posterolateral spinal fusion.
