Goal of the research group of Dr. Smith is to develop new pharmaceuticals for the treatment of human disease, particularly novel therapies that will aid human tissue regeneration and repair. In collaboration with the Centre for Regenerative Biology and Medicine, Indianapolis, USA, the scientists have used the frog Xenopus laevis to identify genes that are involved in limb regeneration. Because of mammalian homologues of these genes, the research group is exploring the role and potential therapeutic utility of these genes in mammalian tissue repair.
