Enzo Biochem (NYSE:ENZ) is engaged in the research, development and manufacture of innovative health care products based on molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques and in providing diagnostic services to the medical community. The business activities of Enzo Biochem are performed by the company’s three wholly owned subsidiaries: Enzo Life Sciences, Enzo Therapeutics and Enzo Clinical Labs. The Company’s proprietary labeling and detection products for gene sequencing and genetic analysis, with approximately 200 patents worldwide, are sold to the life sciences market throughout the world. The Company’s therapeutic division is in various stages of clinical evaluation of its proprietary gene medicine for HIV-1 infection and its proprietary immune regulation medicines for hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection and for Crohn’s disease. The Company also holds a patent covering a method of materials for correcting point mutations or small insertions or deletions of genetic material that would allow for editing and correcting certain abnormalities in genes.

Enzo Therapeutics is developing new products and therapies based on three separate technology platforms for the treatment of a variety of diseases and disorders. These platforms include gene regulation (company has developed novel methods and materials that are currently being used in clinical trials for the management of HIV-1 infection), immune regulation (management of adverse immune reactions in which clinical trials are being conducted for the treatment of chronic active hepatitis associated with hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses and autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease) and gene editing (to correct inborn errors of metabolism, such as Sickle Cell Anemia).
Apart from own patents, Enzo Biochem has also licensed patents.


Received approval in Israel to begin a Phase I clinical trial to study safety of its new immunomodulatory agent, EGS21, a beta-D-glucosylceramide compound (GC), in human subjects. The study is conducted at Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical C.
Results of a Phase IIb clinical trial for Alequel™, the Company’s protein-containing extract for treatment of Crohn’s Disease, were introduced in May, 2005.
