Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI)

Formation of a network of investigators who are performing cutting-edge stem cell research

In March 2004, the Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, announced the launch of a new Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI). The centre is expected to be the largest privately funded American stem-cell research project. Goal of HSCI is the coordination of teaching, training, and research of about 25 principle investigators and 64 affiliated scientists in stem cell research. HSCI will also integrate the work of the seven Harvard schools and the six affiliated hospitals to develop stem cell therapy in order to cure organ failure.

Initial priorities are five research areas: diabetes, blood diseases (including AIDS), neurodegenerative diseases, musculoskeletal diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Primarily, the institute will be a “virtual” institute supporting and bundling researchers. To date, Harvard has developed 17 new embryonic stem cell lines with private funding.
