Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research - Laboratory of Experimental Neuroimmunology

Pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and establishment of novel treatment strategies

In 2000, the Hertie-Foundation supported the establishment of the Hertie-Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH) at the University of Tübingen with an endowment of 21.5 million euro. Together with the Department of Clinical Neurology, the HIH is to become an integral part of the University’s Centre of Neurology. In addition, this institution is to be the largest and most modern centre for neurological research in Germany. The Institute has four departments, the Department of General Neurology, the Department of Cognitive Neurology, the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases, and the Department of Cellular Neurology.

The Department of General Neurology – Laboratory of Experimental Neuroimmunology (Dr. Dr. Robert Weissert) focuses on the understanding of the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and establishment of novel treatment strategies: This also includes research on stem cell therapy of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and the neuroprotection in EAE (Myelin-oligodendrocyte-glycoprotein induced EAE).
