Hybrid Organ GmbH
Berlin-based biomed company engaged in the development and commercialisation of advanced cell culture bioreactors.
Hybrid Organ GmbH was founded in 1996. At the beginning, the company was ocused on the development of bioreactors for clinical systems and innovative biotechnological applications. Currently, Hybrid Organ produces prototypes and a series of small scale hollow-fibre bioreactor systems, along with the necessary pump and control devices.

The company’s technology addresses both clinical needs in the field of cell-based therapies, and research needs in stem cell technology for hybrid organ development. Primary focus is on liver therapy. The bioreactor systems produced by Hybrid Organ GmbH can be grouped into 1) bioreactor systems for medical therapies with cells, 2) bench top bioreactor systems for the production of therapeutic and diagnostic substances using primary cells, and 3) bioreactor systems for laboratory research and analytical purposes with primary cells (cell-biology, pharmaceutical industry). Major focus of the company is research and treatment of liver diseases. Liver disease is still the fourth leading cause of death. The first commercial product of the company the Modular Extracorporeal Liver System - MELS - for clinical therapy in liver intensive care units. The device enables temporary extracorporeal support of patients in severe liver failure. A modular concept allows treatment with different levels of complexity, the most complex module enables the utilization of liver cells in bioreactor culture. The hybrid liver module performs synthesis, metabolism and regulation of the failing organ.
