Genzyme Biosurgery develops a Fleming-Poff scale for use in assessing the efficacy of dermal fillers. The Fleming-Poff scale provides an objective reference scale for assessing the severity of nasal-labial folds by using a standardized facial image that has been changed to represent these wrinkles at various depths, on a six-point scale. Previous scales relied on different facial images to represent each wrinkle depth, which led to less objective measurements.

Genzyme Biosurgery markets a set of HA-based products, including Synvisc® (hylan G-F 20), for pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee, and the Sepra™, for improving the outcome of surgery by reducing the incidence of adhesions.
A product in the cell therapy business area called Epicel® (cultured epidermal autografts) is an autologous cell therapy designed for permanent skin replacement. Carticel® (autologous cultured chondrocytes) uses similar technology to renew a patient’s own cartilage cells to replace damaged cartilage in the knee.

Currently, several clinical studies are being undertaken including two phase 3 clinical studies on Synvisc® (osteoarthritis), a preclinical study on the use of Carticel®II in knee cartilage damage, a phase 3 study on adhesion prevention using Seprafilm™ II and a preclinical study using Sepragel® Ortho.
