GKSS-Research Centre Geesthacht GmbH - Institute of Chemistry

Research of membranes in process and biomedical technology

GKSS is one of fifteen national research facilities that belong to the HGF (Hermann von Helmholtz Society of German Research Centres). The Research Centre in Geesthacht and its external site at the Institute of Chemistry in Teltow near Berlin employ 700 people. The annual budget of 65 million euros is provided by the German government (90%) and the federal states (10%), additional finance is generated through contract research and out licensing.

The Institute of Chemistry investigates biomaterials for the development of multifunctional materials. The institute is developing new bio-compatible materials as the basis for specific functions (biomaterial) and the use of these in manufacturing, transport and insulation processes for materials (bioprocessing technology). In the field of regenerative medicine, particular aspects in the development of multifunctional materials are their tissue- and haemocompatibility as well as their biodegradability.
