The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) is one of the four institutes of the Life Science Alliance of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and was founded in 1987. The Institute operates in the areas of biomedical and medical engineering, laser medicine, biotechnology, health telematics, environmental control systems, laboratory development, cryo technology, material testing, etc. as well as in industrial process automation and in-line/on-line process control, especially for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

The laboratories are fully equiped for the isolation and preparation of various in vitro cultures as well as for the differentiation and analysis of adult stem cells. It also includes micro injection and dissection technology.
