Aachen Centre of Competence: Biomaterials
Basic research, development and industrial production of biomaterials for implants.
The Centre is located at the RWTH Aachen University of Technology and brings together researchers from different disciplines including the natural and medical sciences. Financial support is provided by the German BMBF and the Ministry of Science, Research and Art of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Centre cooperates with the industry aiming at the development of improved implants.
The Centre is divided into four main project areas: “Materials, R&D and Analysis”, “Biochemistry and Non-clinical Medicine”, “Materials Processing” and “Surface Modification”.

The Centre is engaged in the development of new polymers and processing techniques in order to improve the control of resorbability and the interfacial biocompatibility of implants, including the examination of biomaterial properties and biocompatibility, the certification as well as the transfer of technology to industrial partners.
Major focus is devoted to developing new resorbable polymers based on depsipeptides and the modification of biomaterial-surface using biologically active substances, investigating the compatibility of polymers for implants and surface modification, developing new implants involving resorbable polymers and thermolabile additives and investigating the interaction between tissues and implants.
