ViaCell, Inc.
Development of cellular treatments for cancer, genetic diseases, immune deficiencies and neurological diseases, with particular focus on stem cells.
ViaCell (Nasdaq: VIAC), evolved 1994 from the merger of Breeders, Inc. and Viacord. In 2003 ViaCell expanded to Europe with the aquisition of Kourion Therapeutics AG. ViaCell is organised in three business units: Viacord, Neuroscience and Endorine Science.

The Viacord Division of ViaCell offers umbilical cord blood stem cell banking services. The Neuroscience Devision was formed in 2002 in order to develop exogenous stem cells as treatments to replace lost brain or muscle cells, and to develop stem cell stimulants as treatments to mobilise endogenous stem cells already residing within brain or muscle tissue. The ViaCell Endocrine Science Division is engaged in the research and development of cellular medicines for the treatment of various diseases of the human endocrine system. The focus lies on type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes. Selective Amplification(TM) is a proprietary process that allows stem cells to be purified and grown in culture from complex, heterogeneous mixtures of harvested cells, as found in bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood. Principle of this process is the removal of contaminating differentiated cells from the cultures at various times of the culture process.
In a phase I/II clinical trial of CB001, ViaCell is currently testing its safety and durability of blood and immune system reconstitution in the treatment of patients with advanced stages of hematologic cancers. CB001 is a highly purified population of stem cells that has been isolated from umbilical cord blood and multiplied using the company’s patented Selective Amplification technology.
