The Department of Plastic and Hand Surgury was established in 1997 as an independent department at the University Hospital of Freiburg. Approximately 39 employees are currently involved in the medical care of patients and research.

The research group around Prof. Stark has been engaged in the field of tissue engineering for more than 10 years. As one result of their research the scientists introduced fibrin as a suppurting matrix, which seems ideal for cell proliferation. The cells to be transplanted are embedded in hardening fibrin scaffolds. The scientists are also investigating mesenchymal stem cells, they breed bone and cartilage tissues, develop nerve, muscle and tendon substitutes and deal with skin repair and wound healing. The company BioTissues evolved from the department several years ago.
