Prof. Schnettler and his group are investigating degradable and non-degradable bone substitutes made of ceramics as well as absorbable calcium phosphate materials relating to their surface condition, protein absorption ability and chemical solubility. Aditionally, the group is investigating the possibility to coat ceramic implants by using different combinations of growth factors. Biochemical markers and surface associated antigens are used to characterise mesenchymal stem cells, preosteoblasts and osteoblasts.
