Bioprofile Programme: Regenerative Biology

The Association for the Promotion of Biotechnology (Verein zur Förderung der Biotechnologie) manages the BioProfile programme and provides advice and support to the applicants.

The BioRegion STERN was selected as one of the three winners of the BioProfile competition for its proposal on regeneration biology in May 2001. Funding of approximately 18 million € was provided by the BMBF to pursue research and development in this field within the next five years. The aim being to strengthen the international competitiveness of the German biotechnology sector. The major task of the Association for the Promotion of Biotechnology (Verein zur Förderung der Biotechnologie) concerns the management of the BioProfile and BioChancePlus programmes. An expert commission under the chair of Prof. Dr. Herwig Brunner has been set up to evaluate the submitted proposals on the topic ‘regeneration biology’.

The major task of the Association concerns the management of the BioProfile programme. Detailed guidelines were set up for the applicants which describe the entire process from the submission of the project proposal to evaluation and the final acceptance through the Project Management Organisation Jülich. The applicants can seek individual advice from the agency and obtain support in finding cooperation partners or information on further contacts providing such things as advice on business foundations. Among the currently funded projects are the following: Nutritargeting - Highly selective enrichment strategies for the regeneration of biological systems: BioTeSys GmbH, Esslingen The influence of heat-shock proteins on wound healing: Hölle & Hüttner AG, Tübingen, in cooperation with the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Tübingen Therapeutic use of mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage/bone replacement: TETEC GmbH, Reutlingen, in cooperation with the University Hospital Tübingen and the NMI, Reutlingen Novel approach of in vivo tissue regeneration using RNA technologies with skin tissue as an example: CureVac GmbH, Tübingen Development of substances counteracting biofilm generation on regenerative and synthetic tissue implants: DR. PETRY genmedics GMBH, Reutlingen in cooperation with SOURCON-PADENA GmbH & Co KG, Tübingen. Ars Arthro AG was awarded 1.6 million euros in funds for the manufacture of ligaments and tendons and the development of large articular cartilage grafts from unhealthy autologous cells. Project partners are the Fraunhofer Institute of Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB) in Stuttgart and BioTeSys GmbH in Esslingen.
