The maggot treatment has been found suitable for treating deep wounds following infections or difficulties in healing. Sterile Lucilia sericata larvae are cultivated to a size of 2-3 mm in small bags (similar to tea bags). Following the application of the maggots to the wound, the larvae secrete proteolytic enzymes which fluidify necrotic tissue, which is then taken up by the maggots as food. After 5 days, the maggots have grown to 8-10 mm and can be removed. Some wounds can be cleaned with one application, other wounds might require three or more Lucilia applications.
