The spectrum of research covers physico-chemical, biological and clinical aspects of materials and technologies as well as the biofilm formation.

The research group of Prof. Geis-Gersdorfer consists of approximately 20 employees. Prof. Geis-Gersdorfer is also the director of the Centre for Biofilm Research Tübingen (www.medical-biofilms.net).

In vitro investigation of biological performance of 3D-scaffolds in hard tissue engineering (combination of bioceramics and polymers). When microstructural biomaterial surfaces are used, effects of directional cell growth (contact guidance) are observed so as to improve biomedical applications. The department strives at developing a test system for evaluating initial interactions between biomaterial and biosystem (QCM-D-System = Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation monitoring). The QCM-D-System allows a mass sensitive detection of adsorbed molecules.
