Main focus of research is the analysis and charaterisation of inflammatory tissues and matrix in relation to diseases of inflammatory and degenerative connective tissue, like rheumatism. One central project is stem cell biology, led by Dr. Michael A. Cross. It uses both multipotent cell lines and primary stem cells to investigate details of gene regulation, growth factor effects and metabolic features that influence the decision of differentiation (formation of new tissues) versus self-renewal (replacement of stem cells lost by differentiation).
