Regea Institute for Regenerative Medicine


Research activity in the field of tissue engineering; tissue bank services were started in 2005


Regea is a joint institute that operates under the University of Tampere. It was founded by the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, University Hospital in Tampere, Pirkanmaa Polytechnic and Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement in 2004.

The tissue bank business commenced its operations in spring 2005 and the construction of the tissue bank cleanrooms will be completed at the beginning of 2006.

Regea’s Stem Cell Unit is led by Professor Outi Hovatta and is primarily working on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for clinical applications. Major research concentrates on the development of cell culture conditions for clinical applications.

Regea runs the first tissue bank in Finland that meets the new EU tissue establishment directive (2004/23/EC) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements.
