Establishment of a centre of excellence in research, education, and commercial development of tissue-engineering topics; dissemination of information related to tissue engineering.
The Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative was set in 1996 in order to promote the Pittsburgh region to be internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in research, education and commercial development for the advancement of tissue-related medical therapies. PTEI also fosters economic development by promoting the growth of the regional biotechnology industry rooted in tissue engineering and administers the National Tissue Engineering Center for the U.S. Department of Defense.
PEI works in close cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, the University of Pittsburgh, the UPMC Health System and the Windber Research Institute.
