Teva was founded in Jerusalem in 1901 as a small wholesale drug business. The company was called Salomon, Levin and Elstein Ltd. after its founders. Israel’s largest pharmaceutical company, with more than 91% of its sales outside Israel, mainly in the USA and Europe. It is also among the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is listed on Nasdaq (TEVA). The company has approximately 14,000 employees worldwide. Production facilities are located in Israel, North America, Europe and Mexico. The company maintains numerous partnerships, including e.g. Lundbeck with which a long-term cooperation agreement exists regarding the joint development and marketing in Europe of Rasagiline for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Copaxone® was the company’s first drug for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. The drug was approved in the USA in 1997 and has in the meantime been approved in 43 countries. Agilect®/Azilect® is a drug for treating Parkinson’s disease. It has been approved for marketing in the EU and Israel; it is in advanced stages of regulatory review in the US and other countries. The company holds a large number of patents of which a selection is listed.


Several drugs for the treatment fo multiple sclerosis, neurological/neurodegenerative and auto-immune/inflammatory diseases are currently undergoing Phase II clinical trials.
