The company hopes to use autologous angiogenic cell precursors (ACPs) expanded ex vivo in order to treat patients suffering from severe anginal syndrome who are not responsive to treatment. ACPs are aimed at promoting the formation of natural bypass blood vessels within the ischemic (not yet scarred tissue) and improve the conditions of such patients. Blood samples are collected from the patient, cells are isolated and grown. Specific conditions help the cells to differentiate into ACPs and proliferate. After this step, the cells are implanted by direct injection into the patients’ heart vessels where they build capillaries or differentiate into smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes. Currently, treatment can also be invisioned for ophthalmic disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.
