The primary target of the company is osteoarthritis, one of the leading causes of disability at older age by understanding and regulating the key signalling pathways that govern the recruitment, proliferation and differentiation of musculoskeletal cells. TiGenix’ proprietary technology platform is based on research findings of the Laboratory for Skeletal Development and Joint Disorders of the Department of Rheumatology at the University of Leuven, relateding to the consistent generation of in vivo quality-controlled stable hyaline cartilage using autologous chondrocytes and precursor cell populations.
TiGenix’ lead product for cartilage repair, ChondroCelect™, has been approved as IND in the United States by the FDA.
