The tissue engineering programme at KHRI comprises physiology, psychophysics, electrical engineering, morphology, material sciences, genetics, cell biology and molecular biology.

Dr. Josef M. Miller, Director of the Cochlear Signals and Tissue Engineering Lab, focuses on the understanding of basic mechanisms of protection and tissue repair and recovery of the traumatised cochlea.

Dr. Yehoash Raphael, Head of the Otopathology Laboratory, is investigating the transdifferentiation of non-sensory supporting cells into hair cells as it is standard in birds or other non-mammals. His research group has induced transdifferentiation by insertion of the gene Atoh1, a gene known to be involved in hair cell differentiation.
