The loss/replacement of teeth is currently done with dentures, bridges or synthetic/titanium post implants. Odontis Ltd. is hoping to be able to offer natural, live tooth substitutes. The buds, when implanted back into the patient, are expected to regenerate a living tooth that is embedded in associated bone and connective tissues. Laboratory investigations have shown that some cultured cell types can be induced to develop into teeth. This discovery is the basis of the company’s current research and development programme.
