Salk Institute for Biological Studies - Laboratory of Genetics

Development of methods of replacing or enhancing diseased brain and spinal cord tissues

The Salk Institute was established in the 1960s by Dr. Jonas Salk. The first laboratory was opened in 1963 under the guidance of five senior scientists and their research teams.

Today, the institute contains 24 laboratories of biomedical research, for example the Laboratory of Genetics co-headed by Fred H. Gage.

The Salk Instiute for Biological Studies focuses on molecular biology and genetics, neurosciences and plant biology. With the completion of the Human Genome Project, the institute’s areas of research are now focusing on proteomics, stem cell biology, cell biology, regulatory biology and metabolic research.
It is the aim of the institute’s scientists to develop new therapies and treatments of diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, anomalies of the brain or birth defects.

The Laboratory of Genetics is investigating the mechanisms controlling the stem cell behaviour as a particular target in the therapy of the aforementioned diseases. Focus is put on the process of spermatogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster, in which stem cells can be easily located and studied in the context of their normal environment.

A further area of investigation is the development of therapies involving the replacement of diseased or lost brain and spinal cord tissues by researching the adult central nervous system.
