Columbia University has dealt with biomedical engineering since 1962. In January 2000, the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) became a separate department at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, still belonging to Columbia University.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering focuses on the methods of physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering according to biological and biomedical problems.
Areas of research include the following:
- orthopaedic, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular biomechanics;
- cellular and tissue engineering, biomaterials, bone bio-engineering, molecular and microscale bioengineering;
- biomedical imaging;
- artifical organs research;
- biophotonics and optical radiology;
- neurotrauma and repair;
- ultrasound and elasticity imaging.
