Elan Corporation is focused on medical areas of neuroscience, in which it researches, develops, produces and markets advanced therapies in neurology, autoimmune diseases and severe pain, especially inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Elan’s markets the following products in the United States:
PRIALT® (ziconnotide intrathecal infusion) used in the treatment of severe pain;
AZACTAM® (aztreonam for injection, USP), MAXIPIME® (cefepime hydrochloride) for injection, both for therapies of infectious diseases;
TYSABRI® indicated for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease.
PRIALT® is also approved for sale in the EU

Elan is interested in neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Alzheimer’s disease, and the development of new therapeutical approaches based on immunotherapy, beta and gamma secretase inhibitors. These inhibitors target enzymes whose actions are responsible for the accumulation of the amyloid plaques in the brains of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Elan’s research programmes contain several products that are in the developmental and discovery status, including Alzheimer’s immunotherapies in phase I and II clinical trials. Therapies based on beta and gamma secretase research as well as Parkinson’s disease research are in discovery stage.
The application of TYSABRI® (natalizumab) has been extended to indication areas of rheumatoid arthritis in a phase II clinical trial and in a preclinical phase for the indication of autoimmune diseases. The development is partially done in collaboration with Wyeth and Biogen Idec.
