Smith & Nephew was founded as early as 1856 and operates in 33 countries. Today Smith & Nephew is organised in 4 business units: Orthopaedics, Endoscopy and Advanced Wound Management. The company employs actually over 8,000 people.
In 2002, the company acquired the Dermagraft joint venture from Advanced Tissue Sciences; in 2004 it acquired VERSAJET surgical debridement product from HydroCision Inc. In July 2006, Smith & Nephew Inc. Endoscopy Division announced the acquisition of OsteoBiologics, Inc.

Smith & Nephew markets approximately 1,000 products; the orthopaedics product line includes e.g. Oxinium (knee replacement), Supartz (joint fluid therapy for pain reduction), Exogen (ultrasound; accelerates healing of bone fractures, TriGen (nailing system) as well as hip implants and trauma products.

The company’s endoscopy products with soft tissue resection and repair products help reduce trauma and pain in the patient, among them FasT-Fix (meniscal cartilage), TwinFix (shoulder fixation) or IDET minimally invasive spine procedure. The company also markets wound management products for difficult-to-heal wounds or which speed up the healing process, including polymeric gels, films and foams with key products such as Allevyn, Acticoat, Dermagraft, TransCyte.
