Biomaterials and bioactive surfaces for medical use

Carmeda’s foundation was based on the invention of Carmeda BioActive Surface (CBAS™) in the 1970s. Further research by Prof. Olle Larm resulted in a technology that was able to retain the biological function of heparin in spite of linking it to different surfaces. In 1983, Medicarb was founded to market this patented technology. Carmeda was established in 1984 as a subsidiary of Medicarb to concentrate on the medical application of the invention and the marketing sector.

In 2005, Carmeda was acquired by W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc.

Carmeda AB concentrates on bioactive surfaces and biomaterials for medical use, i.a. including their patented technologies Carmeda® BioActive Surface and MACHS™.

Carmeda® BioActive Surface (CBAS™) is a technology to coat the surface of biomaterials with heparin by retaining the biological properties of the heparin molecules while being covalently bound to the surface.

Carmeda’s second technology, Medical Advanced Carbohydrate Systems (MACHS™), is based on heparin and chitosan. MACHS™ aims at a combination of heparin and chitosan to take advantage of chitosan’s property to form strong physical structures and heparin’s anti-inflammatory, -bacterial and biocompatible characteristics, e.g. for the application in orthopaedics or regenerative tissue engineering.
