Alexion Pharmaceuticals focuses on antibody-based drugs for the treatment of cardiac, blood and autoimmune diseases. The drugs are inhibitors of the complement cascade of the immune system.
Eculizumab, which is envisaged to reach market approval in in 2007, has achieved positive results in the treatment of paroxymal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, which is a rare blood disorder. Additional experiments suggest the suitability of this product in problems involving the immune system such as transplantation or severe chronic asthma.
Eculizumab has passed through two Phase II studies for rheumatoid arthritis and a further study Phase II for membranous nephritis and is being tested in Phase III in PNH. The drug has also been tested for its effect in the treatment on dermatomyiositis, psoriasis and lupus.
A Phase III evaluation of Pexelizumab used for the treatment of myocardial infarction was initiated in 2004. Two more compounds for the treatment of cancer are currently undergoing preclinical investigations.
