Acumen Pharmaceuticals focuses on neurodegenerative diseases and escpecially Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The company’s target compound, termed ADDL, is supposed to have neurotoxic properties and block essential pathways in nerve cells.
As high ADDL concentrations could be found in AD brain cells compared to healthy cells, the first idea was to use ADDL for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Acumen also works on the development of treatment options, including active immunotherapy and the use of small molecules as assembly blocker of ADDL.
