Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI

Transfer of medical research into the clinic

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) is dedicated to finding solutions to specific problems at the interfaces between medicine, life sciences and engineering and forges partnerships with entities active in medicine-related industries and businesses. The Institute’s core competencies are in GMP cell and biopharmaceutical manufacture, immunology, regenerative medicine, and cell-therapeutic methods of regenerating non-functioning tissue and organs as well as biological substitution with tissue cultivated in vitro (tissue engineering).

The institute operates a 450 sqr meter modern, multi-purpose-GMP-clean room facility (expansion of the GMP facility by 450 additional sqr meters metres is planned in 2009). The rooms are fully qualified for aseptic manufacture of biologics for our customer from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry as well as for clinics, universities and research facilities. The majority of the available clean room suites is dedicated to the manufacturing of human autologous or allogenic cell therapeutics (e.g. tissue engineering products, stem cell preparation, tumour vaccines, gene therapeutics).
Through a flexible design, the manufacturing rooms are particularly attractive for young biotechnology firms that are interested in developing new active ingredients and therapeutics and would like to seamlessly segue into clinical trials.
