Technologies for the application of adult stem cells to the functional restoration of damaged or diseased tissues

Privately held development stage company, founded in 1992. The company is based on the work of Dr. Arnold Caplan and his colleagues at Case Western Reserve University. They showed that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the potential to differentiate into several lineages, such as muscle, bone, cartilage, marrow stroma, tendon and fat. The company has entered into a strategic alliance with Boston Scientific Corporation for the development and commercialisation of its cardiac product; an alliance to develop and commercialise treatment of haematologic malignancies in Japan exists with JCR Pharmaceuticals Co.

Osiris is focused on developing technologies for the application of adult stem cells on functional restoration of damaged tissues. Proprietary technology involves the aspiration of adult bone marrow to extract, isolate, purify and grow human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC); only a small amount of bone marrow is required as starting material. It is aimed at developing an MSC cell therapy that will address multiple tissue defects and disease.
Prochymal™ is intended to treat patients with acute graft vs. host disease (GVHD).
Provacel™ is considered to prevent scar formation and progression to congestive heart failure, thus applicable for the treatment of heart muscle damage in patients who have suffered a heart attack.
The injection of adult stem cells (Chondrogen™) promotes regeneration of the meniscus and protects the articular cartilage from degeneration leading to osteoarthritis.

Lead product of Osiris, Prochymal™, is entering Phase II clinical trials and is on track to be approved by the FDA as early as the 4th Quarter of 2007.
Provacel™ is enrolling patients in a Phase I clinical trial.
Osiris starts a Phase I/II study for Chondrogen™.
