The company’s main programme is a small molecule treatment for obesity and metabolic syndrome, which is expected to advance into clinical development in early 2005. Xenon’s CNS and iron metabolism drug programmes are currently in lead optimisation. The therapies are based on genetic causes of select metabolic, neurological and cardiovascular diseases. The integrated target and drug discovery platform of Xenon includes gene discovery and validation to compound screening, chemical compound libraries, assay development, high throughput screening (HTS), medicinal chemistry and in vivo drug testing clinical-based approach, Xenon has discovered 17 genes to date.
The obesity/metabolic syndrome programme is focused on the development of small molecule inhibitors of the key enzyme stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (“SCD1”). The focus of Xenon’s iron overload programme regards the development of a novel class of small molecule compounds to reduce body iron stores for the treatment of iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis and thalassaemia. Xenon’s HDL-cholesterol programme is focused on the development of small molecule compounds that will raise HDL-cholesterol. This programme is based primarily on the discovery of the ABCA1 gene as a major regulator of reverse cholesterol transport and HDL levels. Xenon also runs a neuroscience programme.
